ásháana (2017-ongoing)

“joyful menstruation, to menstruate joyfully”

The term ásháana comes from the Láadan language: the incredible work of Suzette Haden Elgin, which is based on the relationship between society with its problematic patriarchal toxicity, and language. Elgin suggests that the already existing human languages do not possess the ability to express the entire experiential spectrum of women and menstruators and therefore, shape the way we perceive and communicate these experiences through a narrow patriarchal lens. From there, I started looking at how culture affects the way we understand and consider menstruation: the cultural shame, lack of information, inaccesibility to products and menstrual poverty.

I create collective and solo rituals to re-claim and heal the menstrual body, with a focus on inclusivity of trans and queer menstrual experinces. I believe menstruation can offer everyone a precious insight into the inner cycles of the body, which come as a resistance, and in opposition to, the capitalist grind culture.

ásháana ritual-performance was first presented at The Others, London, in 2017.

The HOLY GRAIL
Is a bloody
Menstrual cup. Bodies that bleed for days without
Dying. Are the bodies
In-between. The liminal bodies
The both alive and how come alive
Bodies. The blood
Is a portal.

To the underworlds to
The ancestors to
The slow rhythms.

Let the blood be blood and not blue on clean cotton.
Let the blood be blood and not shame not codewords not poverty not dirty not hiding not hiding not hiding
Let the blood be proud.
I'll rise up and dance in the sun.

with the holy grail

i'll rise up and dance in the sun
